April, 2021
How many times have you heard the phrase ‘A happy you, a healthy you’? However, many of us focus only on physical aspects while calculating the health quotient leaving aside one’s happy well-being. Being healthy is more than just eating and sleeping right. Yes, exercise does augment your vital signs however, a person’s well-being, his happy and positive state of mind and his confidence contributes greatly to his overall health.
While many of us invest greatly and spend hours in building muscle strength but, we forget to boost and strengthen our self-esteem. The most educated and talented people may suffer from illnesses related to poor self-esteem and mental wellness however decide to give a blind eye to its ever-lasting results on health. Although self-confidence is not considered as a direct mental health metric, it certainly has clear linkage to the way one feels and sees herself or himself, which in turn, affects the person’s mental well-being. While a confident and positive person can see a silver lining in almost every situation, the lack of it makes one struggle to have a happy and successful life. They have negative feelings about themselves and feel less worthy in their relationships.
Confidence and Vital signs go hand in hand. In fact, one often leads to the other. The problem starts when a person feels, “If my health was better, I would feel better about myself.” On the contrary, if the person feels confident in his abilities and achievements, it will increase the interest and energy levels to achieve your fitness goals realistically. The more acceptance you show towards your flaws, you will see channel your mental health to gain your physical health. Whether you stretch your health targets to develop a healthy lifestyle largely depends on your perspectives, choices, thoughts, esteem levels and mental well-being.
For example, if someone decides to try a weight loss program and lose 10 kgs, one needs to have confidence to achieve this goal. One would be equally determined to adopt healthy diet choices, begin jogging or gymming more regularly, regulate their hunger pangs and stick to the plan on a sustainable level. A confident person will find their way to make this happen and overcome all the obstacles experienced every now and then
I am sure you will agree that even the most skilled get caught up in muddles and mundane situations in life, but many focus on their insecurities and inabilities than channelizing their energy to bring out the best outcomes. A person with immense belief in self will overcome such obstacles and handle challenges with greater ease. When he makes choices or takes decisions, he will have lesser reasons to worry or feel nervous. In our recent video, we brough out the resulting effects of worry or nervousness on your mental and physical health. Insomnia, loss of appetite, poor eating habits, drug abuse, muscle tension and weakness, fatigue, headaches, acidity and gastro-intestinal problems, worry lines and dark circles are just some of the ailments that one experiences or suffers from.
Whereas if you are less insecure or stressed, you will sleep well, have more attention on your work, enjoy leisure and mindful times with self and friends, gets less involved in arguments or conflicts, or just feels better on a daily basis. A confident person will have more relationship goals to achieve and will find joy in small moments of happiness.
Let me put forth a disclaimer that I firmly believe and advise my clients every time… One cannot have higher levels of confidence in all areas of life! For example, I am extremely confident in my abilities to address and speak in front of large audiences however, you give me the steering wheel amidst jam-packed and rowdy traffic and my knees go soft. You can experience low confidence in different levels, situations and roles. So, what can you do to build just enough confidence to have positive effects on our mental, physical and social well -being?
Ask Yourself and make a list of your insecurities, fears or limitations in different situations. You may also add your responses to such situations.
As research studies state, focus on your strengths and skills than counting the weaknesses. The things that you are good at will build immense energy and positivity in you whereas the things that you are not good at will suck the air out of you.
Stay away from the incessant attention-seekers who complaint, seem unhappy at all times or condescending in their mind. These kinds of people act as a parasite who thrive on your goodness into acrimonious demeanor. They never let you strike a balance in your mind and heart and keep you deprived of fundamental happiness, leaving more heartburns than ever.
Have you come across such people who give a compliment with a sting in its tail? In our profession, we see such people who find it difficult to give or accept compliments genuinely. A simple ‘thank you’ or ‘please’ can go a long way in easing tensions and bridging gaps in relationships. These golden words are long forgotten in today’s times.
Well, we do not come with tablets or self-help manuals in our hand. So, how do we have solutions for every problem on hand? Take a look at your environment and you will find your answers. Observe someone who is happy and confident at the base level. Check on which words they speak. What kind of decisions they take? What do they focus on? What strategies they adopt to come through tough spots? These are the shapers and the influencers of your life!
Keep a check on how your brain and heart connect each other. Most of the times you get torn apart when both of them take parallel routes. Increase your concentration, memory and interest levels as these parameters do affect every part of your life. Most importantly it affects your confidence and productivity levels. Observe which situations trigger wrong moods, unsettling thoughts, anxiety or depressive hormones. Learn to anticipate them firstly. A good sleep can do wonders to your equilibrium than you could ever imagine. Do not strike off that vacation plan to ring in the cash register. Gift yourself with mindful activities that strengthens your core.
Man was always a social animal and knew to live in groups from the Cenozoic era. Today too, we need to work collaboratively sans the cultural or geographical barriers. Confidence to engage and work with people can help you to strike off your success goals both at work and in life. Work towards breaking that shyness that makes you turn into a ball. Mind you, you are not the only one to feel the butterflies. Volunteer for a project or a committee, create opportunities to meet new people and interact with new teams.
